According to information from The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to extend the ban on TikTok for another 75 days. This would mark the third extension since Trump took office in January.
The current deadline, which is the second extension, is set to end on June 19. Continuing to extend the ban is necessary for TikTok to maintain its operations in the U.S., as negotiations for a deal with China have yet to make progress.
The ban stems from the “Protecting Americans from Foreign-Controlled Applications Act,” which took effect on January 19. However, President Trump has instructed the U.S. Department of Justice not to enforce this law at the present time.
Trump’s main goal is to transfer ownership of TikTok’s U.S. operations to a domestic company. His team has reviewed offers from major corporations such as Oracle, Perplexity, and Amazon, as well as from notable individuals like Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast), investor Kevin O’Leary, and billionaire Frank McCourt.
This process requires cooperation from China for the deal to go through. However, reports indicate that China has not been cooperative, due to ongoing trade tensions stemming from Trump’s tariff policies on Chinese goods.
For now, users can still download and use TikTok. With the repeated extensions, the app is not facing immediate removal from app stores in the near future.
